WHITEOUT:
COMMERCIALIZING BLACK MUSIC
This past 2020 Fall semester, my teammates and I produced our Senior Thesis Documentary film/proposal. We chose a topic that, while incredibly broad, was personally important to us and was appropriately timed with the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. I served as a co-editor for this production.
The final product of this project was:
-A 8 minute-long documentary
-A proposal book of about 100 pages
-A website for our film
Thesis Statement:
Throughout American history, there are clear examples of music being stolen from Black musicians. Despite the oppression that Black artists have faced, they have still managed to be some of the most influential artists in America. This film celebrates music and dances that Black artists have created while bringing attention to some examples of cultural thievery.
A term originally coined by sociologist Ellis Cashmore, The Black Culture Industry is the production and commodification of authentic works created by Black artists in areas of music, dance, and other artistic fields in which white-owned corporations profit off of and therefore, control.
